This fun event requires no experience to create an amazing painting. Check in begins at 1pm at the Animal Shelter. The cost is $65 and proceeds benefit the Animal Shelter’s partner LapCats. Pet Adoption ProjectEmpty Our Shelters Pet Adoption Project, October 17-19

For this one weekend, pet adoptions are just $20. A goal of adopting 500 animals to loving homes has been  challenged for this ASPCA intensive effort by Sacramento County, Yolo County, Sacramento SPCA, City of Sacramento and Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary. Be a part of it! 


Whiskers & Wine Benefit Dinner, October 11

The 5th annual Whiskers & Wine will support the County Animal Shelter and includes host Damany Lewis from News10, dinner by Cafe Napoli, wine tasting, live and silent auctions and raffle. PetSmart Charities® gave a $99,690 free spay/neuter/rabies program grant for Pit Bulls, Chihuahuas and their mixes in 95823 and 95828 zip codes. These areas have highest intake of these breeds to our shelter and the goal is to spay/neuter 1,100+ over a year. Read about the program.​

Three fun nights of Paint and Sip at the Animal Shelter by two Animal Shelter partners! These events require no experience to create an amazing painting. Friends of Unwanted Rabbits (F.U.R.) is hosting Friday, October 25 – registration deadline is 10/9 and pet photo must be submitted by 10/12. Then, November 8 and 9, LapCats is hosting with a registration and pet photo submission deadline by 10/26. All events are $60 and proceeds benefit the Shelter’s animals.

There are no income restrictions for these services; but owners must be Sacramento County residents and their dogs must be pit bull-type dogs. Marcum PlaqueMemorial Dedication Animal Control Officer Roy Marcum                

Animal Control Officer Roy Marcum, who was killed in the line of duty in 2012, was honored with a dedication of a bronze memorial plaque August 29 in the Animal Shelter courtyard. Members of the community, Board of Supervisors, county staff, and animal control officers from cities in the region gathered at the shelter in his honor. Read about the dedication

Alph​a K9 rescued a special Sacramento County Shelter dog named Timber to be trained as a specialized service dog to a veteran afflicted with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. On November 9, 12-year Iraq and Afghanistan Marine Veteran Stephen Corneau, met Timber, his “battle buddy,” for the first time. This was a very special moment for Stephen, his family and for Timber. The Animal Shelter honors and thanks all veterans for their noble service.​

When animals like the injured Philippines dog, Kabang, get media attention there is also an outpouring of donations to pay for surgery. But the Animal Shelter receives hundreds of animals that need surgery – an example, Java, the Chihuahua (photo) had extensive surgery to fix a shattered leg… but there isn’t always funding. The public can donate to help with medical treatments for injured or sick animals. See the Fox40 segment.​

Four Feral/Community Cats Workshops

Get involved to help area feral and community cats! These workshops will train volunteers to transport, trap to alter and vaccinate feral and community cats. Volunteers will also learn about Trap/Neuter/Release programs and coordinate response to public inquires and requests. Workshops will be held in November, December and January at the Animal Shelter.
