Before Turing In Your Pet
Address Behavior Issues
- Seek affordable training—look online under “pet trainers,” or contact local parks and recreation for classes.
- Consider spay/neuter—these procedures often curb behavioral problems.. View more information about free and low-cost resources.
Struggle with Pet-Friendly Housing?
- Many pets are surrendered due to housing issues.
If Rehoming Becomes Necessary
- Try a Rescue Organization First. They may offer referrals or take your pet directly. Visit our resources for information on local rescues.
Find a Responsible New Owner
- Post your pet for rehoming on AdoptaPet.com.
- For pit bull or pit bull mixes, also try Pit Bull Rescue Central.
- Screen possible new homes carefully and avoid using phrases like “free to a good home.”
Contact Your Local SPCA
- Sacramento SPCA serves the entire county (including Folsom and Rancho Cordova) and takes both owned and stray animals.
If None of the Above Work
If you’re a Sacramento County resident (excluding the cities of Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, and Sacramento), you may surrender your pet at the county shelter during open hours.
